Convocation Center

Since opening in 1993, the Hampton University Convocation Center in Hampton, Va. has hosted concerts, basketball games and conventions and has made an impact on both student life and the Hampton Roads community. The Convocation Center's staff is looking to increase the venue's variety of events and number of sponsors and is looking forward to a bright future. The Convocation Center has a capacity of 8,200 for concerts and conventions and 7,200 for basketball and is set on a campus of 6,000 students in a city of 300,000. While it might look small compared to the city's 13,000-capacity Hampton Coliseum, that's only a matter of relativity - the Center has a big past, a big future and a staff with big dreams.

"We want to be the best venue in America!" Blondell Griffin, the Convocation Center's interim director, said. "Or at least the Hampton Roads area." In its history the Hampton University Convocation Center has hosted concerts by Run DMC, Levert, Frankie Beverly and Maze, the Notorious B.l.G., KRS One, Phyllis Hyman, A Tribe Called Quest, Biz Markie, Teddy Carpenter and Cedric the Entertainer to name a few. So far the venue has hosted mainly R&B concerts, catering to the tastes of Hampton University students, the Hampton Roads community and the venue's directors. Griffin said she is looking to expand her musical knowledge past R&B in order to provide a wider variety of shows at the Convocation Center. "I will meet with local radio Stations to find out about up-and-coming artists who are touring and have an interest in coming to the area," she said. "We definitely want to get into other forms of music and not be labeled as a 'rap' venue or 'R&B' venue. We want to cater to everyone." You can search for Concert Tickets on this page.
