American Ballroom Theater in Miami.
In 1982, Pierre Dulaine and Yvonne Marceau left the world of ballroom dance competitions, putting constant travel and four British National Championships behind them. Six months later retirement was over. At the invitation of Liz Thompson, then Executive Director of Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, Dulaine and Marceau along with two other “winning teams” – including Gary Pierce and his partner Lori, shared a program of duets in the Pillow’s Ted Shawn Theater.

Although their program received excellent critical and audience response, the group disbanded until early in 1984. “We were tired of the competition world,” remembers Pierre, “but we wanted to reach the dancing public, and somehow, the seed planted at the Pillow grew. Along with the Pierces, we asked our coach, John Roudis, to help us put together 25 minutes of material. We auditioned for David White, Executive Director of Dance Theater Workshop, who engaged us for a week in October 1984. We added two more couples, and put together a full evening show called Sheer Romance – the rest is now history
